Summer 2016 Is Here!: Programs Updates, Opportunities, and More!

Dear CYI Family and Friends,

As we head into Spring, we have some exciting news to share with you. Let’s congratulate the Chinatown Literacy Project for another successful year! While we celebrate the conclusion of one program, we look forward to a renewed Summer Leadership Institute, a milestone year for the Hate Crimes Prevention Art Project, and a continuation of the Chinatown Beautification Day.

CYI Welcomes Betty Fong and Wilson Wong as SLI 2016 Coordinators

Last summer, Chinatown Youth Initiatives postponed the Summer Leadership Institute to redefine the program to equip our leaders with the tools and knowledge to address contemporary developments within Asian American history and politics in New York City and across the United States.

This Summer, CYI welcomes Betty Fong and Wilson Wong as they take on the mantle as SLI’s Coordinators, CYI’s flagship program.

Betty grew up in Chinatown and currently lives in Elmhurst, Queens. She is a rising senior at Tufts University, and is so psyched to be back in her New York City communities this summer! For the past three years, Betty has been involved with CYI through Chinatown Literacy Project, Summer Leadership Institute, and Chinatown Beautification Day. She is passionate about housing justice for working-class residents of color, particularly in urban spaces. In both Boston and New York, she has worked with various community organizations with similar visions in mind. Her interests include journaling, having tea with good company, and comparing her friends to Pokemon.

Wilson was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He is a rising sophomore at Tufts University, majoring in American Studies. Wilson has been involved with CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities since his sophomore year in high school as both a participant and a youth leader. He was also an intern for the Community Service Learning Program at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, focusing on the effects of social media on the mental health of Asian Americans in the U.S. His interests include sleeping, running, and shopping for affordable “bougie” fashion.
